Jim
Barrett is a Principal in the Miami office of Baker & McKenzie.
During his 16 years with Baker & McKenzie, his practice has
involved providing advice with regard to U.S. federal income
tax issues focusin on inbound and outbound international tax
planning with a specific emphasis on the taxation of partners
and partnerships. A lesser focus of his practice has been
on state and local tax issues, particularly relating the the
State of Florida.
Jim's practice includes a broad range of corporate and commercial
clients, including U.S. companies doing business abroad and
foreign entities engaged in business within the United States.
He has represented a diverse clientele within the real estate,
aviation, telecommunications, banking, pharmaceutical, financial,
import/export, medical, manufacturing, retail, insurance,
security, investment banking and hotel industries.
Jim has authored numerous articles for publication within
the legal profession and has lectured on behalf of the Tax
Executives Institute, the International Fiscal Association,
the Florida Bar Tax Section, the World Trade Center Palm Beach,
the Greater Miami Tax Institute, and the Florida International
Bankers Association. His articles and speeches have focused
on issues relating to partnerships and international taxation.
He
Is a member of The Florida Bar and currently serves as an
Assistant Director of the Federal Tax Section of the Florida
Bar. Jim earned his A.B. in Economics in 1981 at Duke University,
graduating magna cum laude. He received his J.D. degree at
the University of Chicago in 1984, and completed an LL.M.
in Taxation from New York University in 1985.
