Hon. Roger Simmons PC
Senior Policy Advisor, Government Relations

A member of the Gowlings Government Relations and Regulatory Affairs Practice Group, Roger Simmons works out of the firm's Vancouver office to provide advice on government policy, regulatory affairs and advocacy strategies.

For five years previous to his association with Gowlings, Mr. Simmons held the post of Consul General of Canada in Seattle, Washington. Under his leadership, the Consulate represented Canadian interests in a diversity of business and commercial issues including those relating to energy, technology, forest products, border issues and fisheries. The Consulate's Trade and Investment program promoted exports of Canadian goods, investment in Canadian companies and the development of international strategic alliances.

Before joining the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Mr. Simmons held numerous positions in the House of Commons as a Member of Parliament, including Minister of State for Mines and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee. Mr. Simmons also served as Leader of the Opposition in the Newfoundland & Labrador House of Assembly.

In addition to his career in government at both the federal and provincial levels, Mr. Simmons held several positions in the field of education, including president of the province's teachers' union. Roger Simmons is a published author and a regular public speaker in Canada, the U.S. and abroad.
